3G – Third Generation of Mobile Communications

3rd Generation is convergence of voice and data with mobile Internet access, multimedia applications and high data transmission rates. 3rd generation must make worldwide roaming possible. 3rd generation consists of a family of standards under the framework of IMT-2000. The European version is known as UMTS.
3G networks enable network operators to offer a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. 3G features includes HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver data rates up to 14.4 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink.
