Steps to Install Redhat Linux

There are two ways of installing linux
Two types of Installation
  • Graphical Mode Installation
  • Text Mode  Installation
Here we are covering text mode installation, which is much faster compare to Graphical mode installation
First Step is to make CD-ROM as first bootable device option in your system bios Insert your Redhat 9i First disk and reboot your system
Text Mode Installation
In Boot Prompt ,type linux text to continue text mode installation
Step 1
Boot: linux text

          In Welcome to Redhat Screen, press Ok Button to continue for linux installation

           In Language Selection Screen, select the language required and press OK Button to continue installation

Step 3
          Default Keyboard is probed and sensed during the installation.
          In Keyboard Selection Screen, default keyboard is selected, press OK Button to continue installation.

          Default Mouse, is probed and sensed during the installation.
          In Mouse Selection Screen, default mouse is selected, press OK Button to continue installation.

Step 5
Installation Type
Choose Server type installation to acts as Server Machine
Personal Desktop :
          Personal Desktop installation refer to the Desktop Os installation i.e only GUI mode.
          Workstation : Workstation Installation refer, that system is part of your group.
          Server : Server installation refer to machine acts as Server System.
          Custom : Custom Installation refer to the manual client installation

Disk Partioning setup
Generally there are 2 types of partioning
AutoPartition
DiskDruid (Manual Partioning)
         In AutoPartition Mode, partition of hard disk is designed automatically by the installer.
         In Manual Partition (Disk Druid) Mode partition table is designed by the administrator   according to the requirement.
 Basic Linux Partition
 /boot - Partition directory for bootable files such as bootloader, kernel image , filesystem image
 / - Partition directory for administrator user
 /home - Partition directory for user information
 /usr - Partition directory for Os Filesystem
 /opt - Partition directory for third Party Package
 /var - Partition directory for system log information
 /tmp - Partition directory for Temporary File.
 swap – Partition directory for virtual paging.
        
Filesystem and Size:
         For 40 GB HardDisk Partioning
        Generally linux partioning is done in freespace of HardDisk. We have to move the cursor to the freespace and press F3 for creating new partioning.

/boot ext3 500 MB
/usr ext3 10000 MB
/ ext3 10000 MB
/home ext3 10000 MB
/opt ext3 5000 MB
/tmp ext3 2000 MB
/var ext3 2000 MB
swap swap 2 times the Ramdisk.
          Press OK Button to continue installation
Step 7
BootLoader Configuration
(*) Use Grub Boot Loader
( ) Use Lilo Boot Loader
( ) No Boot Loader
          Choose the Bootloader, there are 3 options
          Grub BootLoader has editable and troubleshooting options, compare to lilo  bootloader. So prefarable to choose Grub Boot Loader for your linux system. Select Grub Bootloader and press OK Button to continue installation.

Bootloader Password Setup

Confirm Password : ______________
Here Password is given to protect other user from editing or troubleshooting the bootloader.
Step 9:
            Here it shows how the bootloader menu will be, in edit options we can edit the name of the menu option, press ok button to continue.

Redhat Linux /dev/hda8
Step 10:
             In this menu, it shows where to install the bootloader, select MBR to install the bootloader, press OK to continue installation.

Step 11:
              In this screen, leave the default selection to configure further , or we can assign the ipaddress for the ethernet address, press Ok to continue installation.

[ * ] Activate on boot

Gateway _________________
Step 12 :
               In this Screen firewall is configured according to user authentication level. Select Medium firewall for server. Press Ok to continue installation.

Step 13:
              This screen is used for langauage selection. Select Language as English (USA), press ok to continue installation process.

Step 14 :
               In this screen GMT time is selected. Here we selected Asia/Calcutta for GMT time for India Zone, press ok to continue installation.

Step 15:
              In this screen, password for the root user is assigned. Press Ok to continue installation

Step 16:
             Package to be installed is selected here. Here we selected Everything for our installation, press Ok to continue installation.

          Installation starts, by first formatting the partition and check for the size of the partition. It takes nearly 1 Hour 30 Minutes.
Step 17:
             It is advisable to create boot diskette, to troubleshoot the system, if there is any problem. If you want a create a bootdisk, insert a bootable floppy into the drive to create the disk. Press yes to create a boot diskette, and No to continue the other configuration

Step 18:
             System automatically probes for the video card, we can change video card configuration by Change Option or select the default video card and press ok to continue configuration.

Step 19:
             System automatically for the monitor type and its graphical configuration, there is a change option to edit the default setting, press ok to continue configuration.

Step 20:
            This screen gives information, in which mode the OS should to boot.

Press Ok to set the mode.

           Here comes to end of Installation of linux.
